A police constable involved in a fatal car crash in Mt Albert in October has been charged with dangerous driving.
The charge relates to a crash in New North Rd on October 14, in which 74-year-old Michael Hetmanczyk was critically injured. He died about a week later in hospital.
The 34-year-old constable, who was driving an unmarked police car, suffered only a chipped knee bone but took time off work for counselling.
Mr Hetmanczyk had just bought a newspaper from his local shop when the crash occurred.
His wife, Janice Tilley, said at the time that police had told her the collision happened when her husband attempted a u-turn across the busy road, but she said her husband rarely returned home that way.
The constable is due to appear in court on Friday.
