The Roger James-trained pair Spottswoode and Cronus impressed in their final fast gallop at Matamata yesterday for the $110,000 weight-for-age race at Ellerslie tomorrow.
On a good plough, Cronus followed Spottswoode through the early stages of a round, the 1200m in 1:20 and the 1000 in 1:5. They finished on terms after recording 36.8 from the 600.
Sparklehorse and Kapiston kept together over 1200m in 1:22.4, the 600 in 37.6.
Soap Opera excelled over the latter stages of 1200 in 1:20.4, the 600 in 36.2.
Vulcan Lane and Whistling Gypsy worked in good style over 1200m in 1:18.8, the 600 in 37.8. Imax did similar work in 1:18 and 38.
Trafalgar Flyer was not extended over 1200m in 1:24, the 600 in 39.6. Others allowed steady 1200s included Lunette, 1:24.5 (38.8); Tudor Bay, 1:24.8 (40); Emerald Dream, 1:28 (40.5); Gordon's, 1:29.8 (41.6), Macchiato, 1:27 (41.5); Itti Bit, 1:25 (41) and, on a fast all-weather track, Cheeky Baby, 1:25 (37.5).
At Cambridge, Hero galloped strongly in preparation for the Lion Red Stakes, leading Revolution throughout 1200m on a dead plough, the 1000 in 1:6 and 600 in 40.
Classic Suzy galloped 1000m freely in 1:5, the 600 in 39. Jibella did an easy 1000 in 1:9, quickening from the 600 in 39.
Hastings candidate Lebanon did 1000m with Green Light in 1:9, the final 600 smartly in 37. Fun Luv'n Criminal was restrained over 1000, the 800 in 53.9. Medley loafed over 1000 in 1:10 (40).
Monterey Bay sprinted 600m under a hold in 38.5. Diamond Dust took 41.
Last-start winner Dominant did good work once round on a good plough at Te Awamutu, the last 1000 in 1:2.8 and 600 in 35.4.
Quickest over 1000m was Onyx Own in 1:2.5, the 600 in a slick 34.5.
Herbie also shaped smartly over 1000 in 1:2.9, the 600 in 35.4.
Elevenses and Mac'N' Fries were doing their best work at the finish of 1000m in 1:2.8, the 600 in 35.2. Pickcha Purrfick ran an even 1000 in 1:3.4, the 600 in 37.3. Miss Puzzle dashed 800 in 51.2, the 600 in 37.5.
Kakaho galloped boldly on a fast plough at Takanini to shade Pyramus at the end of 1200m in 1:16.9, the 600 in 37.5.
Greatthings Happen was let off with 600m, but his 36 was smart going under trainer Gary Jenkins.
Ma Victoire galloped 1200 in 1:21 with pace on from the 600 in 36.6.
Blue Veil, who is looking very well, dashed 800m in 48.2, the 600 in 36.
The Ellerslie candidates She's A Meanie, Folk Dance and Ghostsong were again impressive at Avondale.
On a deep plough, She's A Meanie covered 1200m under a firm hold in 1:24.6, the 600 in 39.1.
Folk Dance led Ghostsong by a length at the end of 600m in 42.6, both travelling easily. Straight Back and Home Town Queen did well to run 1000 in 1:7.2, the 600 in 37.6.
Royal Orb hit out in good style on a good plough at Te Aroha, taking 1:6.4 for 1000m, the 600 in 39.4.
Diamond Runner dashed 800m in 49.4, the 600 smartly in 36.9.
Ismailia wound up for Ellerslie with a solid 1400m on a good plough at Te Rapa in 1:34.8, the 600 under a hold in 39.9.
On the sand, Mattstar showed dash over 800m in 48.9, the 600 in 36.2.
