A child has been injured after being hit by a car while running away from a dog onto a Flaxmere road.
The 10-year-old girl was walking to school on Peterhead Road and became frightened by a dog running along the footpath.
She ran onto the road and was hit by an oncoming vehicle at 8.20am.
She was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital with minor injuries but after an assessment and treatment was not admitted.
A police spokesperson said the incident was investigated and the dog was not behaving aggressively towards the girl but have her a fright.
