Police warn that 400 people could lose their lives on New Zealand's roads this year, at the rapid rate the road toll is rising.
This comes after a deadly month on Hawke's Bay's roads, with two cyclists, a motorcyclist and a driver losing their lives in April.
The region's road toll is also steadily increasing - in total 11 people have been killed on roads in the Hawke's Bay and Tararua areas this year- the highest total at this point in a year since 2010.
This is almost double the total for the same time last year. The nationwide road toll already stands at 132 - 12 higher than this time last year.
Eastern District acting road policing manager Senior Sergeant Stu Fleming said investigations into last month's crashes were ongoing, but "one thing that remains constant is that any death or injury on our roads is one too many".
