Debbie Hewitt has beaten dam-opponent Dan Elderkamp to retain the Central Hawke's Bay seat on the Hawke's Bay Regional Council.

Mrs Hewitt said she was "delighted" to be able to serve a second term on the council.

"It is a terrific mandate and honour. You can never take elections for granted so it is a nice time to reflect."

She said she was excited for what was to come and would enjoy today before thinking about everything else tomorrow.

"My husband and I will pick up our daughter from work at four then have a quiet celebration together."

When asked about the issue of the dam with Paul Bailey elected to represent the Napier ward, Ms Hewitt said she would not comment until the preliminary results were out.

"I do not really know yet and will not be able to put it all together or get a feel for it all until 4pm tomorrow when the preliminary results actually come through."

She said she was excited to be a part of the council again and looked forward to building a great team, as it was something that was really important on all councils.
