A unique look at Hawke's Bay through the camera lens won two photographers a top spot in the Royal Society of New Zealand's "visual census" competition.
Like a census, entry photos all had to be taken on the same day - Sunday, April 13, 2014 - to reflect three main trends that emerged from last year's results: an ageing population; increasing diversity and the continuing importance of migration to and from New Zealand.
Amateur photographer Lee Pritchard took out the Adult Diversity category with his photograph At the Crossing and gained a highly commended in the Ageing section for Sunday Family Stroll.
"I headed off with a camera to take three photos. I just saw [the competition] and thought it would be a good challenge," he said.
Mr Pritchard's winning photograph shows a woman at a pedestrian crossing, wearing a bright Rastafarian striped dress, scarf and hat, while a campervan passes in the background. His other successful entry captured a touching moment involving three generations of men out for a walk.
