Detailed designs showing potential upgrades to Flaxmere Park are another positive step towards "changing the face of our suburb", Hastings district councillor Henare O'Keefe said.
Public input has been crucial in designing the new park and a final round of consultation is about to begin.
"The focus is on family and the park has the potential to become a centre for family life," Mr O'Keefe said.
Plans have already changed considerably following community feedback.
Proposed changes to the design of the park include a pedestrian promenade from Swansea Rd to Flaxmere Ave through the park, a walking and cycling track around its perimeter and a new entrance off Henderson Rd to access the duck pond.
The playground will be upgraded and a covered basketball court/performance platform put in adjacent to the relocated skate facility, near Flaxmere town centre.
A new BMX track and splash pad, similar to the one at Cornwall Park are also outlined in the plan.
"The upgrade of the park will work well with planned changes to the town centre," Flaxmere councillor Jacoby Poulain said. "There is a strong community spirit in Flaxmere and we want to develop a village centre that meets resident's needs. Together, the two projects will ensure a new vibrancy rings around the suburb and Flaxmere residents will be able to look at the heart of their community with pride."
Concept plans for Flaxmere Park and submission forms are available at: www.hastingsdc.govt.nz/flaxmerepark, Hastings District Council offices or district libraries.
The cut off date for written submissions is September 16.
Afterwards, feedback will be collated and taken to a hearing scheduled for October.
Once that process is finished work can begin on the park.
"It may be late this year but more realistically it will be early 2012 before the work will begin," a Hastings District Council spokesperson said.
