Batman, this is Superman. And Superman, meet Batman.

Two of the world's most popular comic superheroes are set to meet on the big screen for the first time after film director Zack Snyder told a comic convention that a crossover movie would soon be in the pipeline.

Snyder, who directed this year's hit movie Man of Steel, a re-imagining of the Superman story starring Henry Cavill and Amy Adams, was speaking at the Comic-Con event in San Diego yesterday.

He declined to reveal any more, saying the script was being written.

"There's been a lot of speculation about what we're doing," said Snyder. "It is official that we are going to make another Superman movie. You guys may ask what is the movie about. The truth is you don't want me to tell you what the movie is about, right?"

Warner Bros later confirmed it would be the first time the two appeared together in a movie.

Batman's logo, the unmistakable glowing bat used to beckon him across Gotham City, was teamed with the familiar Superman chest-S on a big screen during the Comic-Con event.

Snyder invited an actor on stage to read a passage hinting at the planned storyline.

"I want you to remember, Clark, in all the years to come, in all your most private moments, I want you to remember your hand at your throat. I want you to remember the one man who beat you," read Harry Lennix, who played General Swanwick in Man of Steel.

This was said to be Batman speaking to Superman, and meant to provide a clue to the plot. The 6000 fans inside the Comic-Con, however, were assured it would not be a straight reworking of a Batman vs Superman comic book story. No working title was announced and Snyder suggested it might be a sequel to Man of Steel, with Cavill still in the lead role.
