Hard-hitting New Zealand cricketer Jesse Ryder has been admitted to a London hospital for tests as concern over his groin muscle injury escalates.
Ryder was unavailable to play in New Zealand's one-run loss to South Africa in their final World Twenty20 pool match at Lord's today.
Shortly after the
match team manager Dave Currie said Ryder, who was able to play in the tournament opener against Scotland despite the injury, had been taken to a nearby hospital.
"Jesse is continuing to suffer serious discomfort and has been admitted to hospital overnight for observation and further tests," Currie said.
Team management would wait for the outcome of those tests before deciding whether Ryder would be replaced for the remainder of the tournament.
"We hope the picture will become clearer in the next 24 hours," Currie said.
Other injury concerns involve captain Daniel Vettori and batsman Ross Taylor.
Vettori is still receiving treatment for a left shoulder injury sustained on the eve of the seven-wicket defeat of Scotland last Saturday.
Vettori, who hurt his bowling shoulder during fielding drills, hopes to be available for New Zealand's first Super Eight fixture against Ireland in Nottingham on Friday (NZT).
Team management are anxious to determine the extent of Taylor's leg injury.
Taylor's grabbed at his left hamstring while batting today and had to complete his innings with a runner.
He will be monitored over the next 36 hours and is unlikely to be risked against Ireland.
Taylor scored 22 as New Zealand made 127 for five, one run shy of South Africa's 128 for seven.
Both sides had already confirmed their places in the Super Eight format.
Left arm pace bowler James Franklin, who also missed the narrow loss to South Africa, has a knee injury but was only rested as a precaution.
