A motorcyclist has been seriously hurt in a crash at one of Tauranga's busiest intersections.

Calls to police reported the motorcyclist had gone through the windscreen of a car in the collision, which happened about 4.10pm at the roundabout of State Highway 29 and Cameron Rd.

Western Bay of Plenty head of road policing Senior Sergeant Ian Campion said police were still at the intersection, known as Barkes Corner.

The crash follows the fatal collision near Te Puke earlier today.

A man was killed in a head-on collision near Manoeka Rd about 2.30pm. Te Puke Highway is expected to be closed for some time.

The serious crashes have been joined by several others this afternoon, with four happening within 90 minutes.

About 2.20pm a car and truck collided on Takitimu Drive, near Route K, and it was understood a person suffered an injury to an arm.

Emergency services were also called to a car crash at Cameron Rd and 21st Ave about 3.45pm. It is understood a baby was taken to Tauranga Hospital.

Another crash backed up traffic at the intersection of Cameron Rd and 9th Ave at 3.55pm.
