A large fire at a Greerton fruit shop is being investigated.
Five fire trucks from Greerton, Tauranga and Mount Maunganui were at the fire from midnight until the early hours of this morning battling the fire.
Fire investigator Bill Rackham said the fire started near electrical equipment, possibly due to an electrical malfunction.
Mr Rackham said the area where the fire started was "totally destroyed".
Fire communications shift manager Daniel Nicholson said the cause of the fire was unknown at this stage.
"We were there most of the night keeping a presence at the scene and ensuring that the fire was extinguished.
"At three minutes past midnight, we started taking calls about a fire on Cameron Rd near Chadwick Rd. We arrived to find the building fully involved in fire."
The fruit shop was about 10m by 30m.
The upset operator of Greerton Produce said this morning he received a call at about 1.30am from the Fire Service.
"I got there in about ten minutes."
He said he wasn't sure when he'd be back in business.
"I had a look at the damage it has done...very extensive damage. Most of the stock has smoke damage or water damage."
The grocer hoped to be back open soon but said the building ceiling was badly damaged.
