A man who doused himself in petrol before setting himself on fire outside a central Tauranga fuel station at the weekend remains in a ''critical'' condition at Middlemore Hospital this afternoon.
The 55-year-old Tauranga man suffered serious burns on Saturday when he set fire to himself at a bus stop near the exit of Z fuel station on 11th Ave and Cameron Rd.
Fuel station staff and passers by desperately tried to save the man with fire extinguishers and forecourt containers filled with water.
He was transferred from Tauranga Hospital to Middlemore Hospital's intensive care unit on Saturday night.
A Middlemore Hospital spokeswoman said the man remained in a critical condition today.
Police stated the man's injuries were self-inflicted and that he suffered from mental illness.
The Bay of Plenty District Health Board would not say whether the man was a current patient.
