UPDATED 5.52pm: A seriously injured man was flown to hospital after a head on crash in Athenree.
Emergency services were called to the crash on Emerton Rd about 3.10pm yesterday.
A 23-year-old man was airlifted to Tauranga Hospital with hip injuries and two broken legs.
A St John spokesperson said the man's 24-year-old wife was also taken to hospital with minor facial injuries.
The 71-year-old man in the other car was taken to hospital by ambulance with moderate to serious internal injuries.
The accident was on a bend in the road.
3.44pm: A person has been freed from a car by emergency services after a two-car crash near Waihi Beach.
Firefighters are still working on cutting free another person.
EARLIER: Emergency services including a rescue helicopter have been called to a crash near Waihi Beach.
The TrustPower TECT Rescue Helicopter, firefighters and St John ambulance staff are on their way to Emerton Rd, between Athenree and Waihi Rd.
It is believed a person is trapped in a vehicle.
The crash happened about 3.15pm.
