Fire has severely damaged Katikati's Caltex fuel station.
Firefighters from throughout the Western Bay of Plenty responded to the 1am blaze today, which threatened to ignite LPG stocks.
Katikati chief fire officer Joe Manukau said the fire was mostly contained to inside the station's building but firefighting crews worked hard to ensure it did not spread further and create an explosion.
Volunteer crews from Waihi Beach, Athenree and Omokoroa joined Katikati in putting the fire out about 5.30am.
A fire investigator will be at the scene today to establish what caused the blaze.
It is understood the fire started in the kitchen area of the building.
