The Wellington Greyhound Club get their Wellington Cup carnival under way with the first of three consecutive Friday meetings at the Hatrick Raceway this afternoon.

Today's meeting starts at 12:13pm, while the next two Fridays will revert back to the normal evening time slot.

And pencil in January 25 as an evening not to miss, which features the running of the Group1 $21,000 Opawa Racing Wellington Cup. As usual today's TAB Quaddie covers the last four races on the card.

The first leg (race 9, 2.29pm) sees two slippery sprinters drawing the inside two traps.

Stiff is an out-and-out railer, therefore, drawing the one trap here is ideal for him, and Cool Charmer is a noted lid pinger who is likely to attempt to lead this field throughout.

The only other proven open class sprinter engaged in this field is Rosemore Osti. She is talented enough to capitalise if the inside drawn two sprinters make early mistakes.

Backyard Bully has been charging through the grades and this fella is poised to earn his open class chasing stripes in the second Quaddie leg.

He has impressed during his short career, which includes a sizzling best 29.85sec in the 520m here. However, he does have one chink in his firepower, which is that he can be a tad tardy in exiting from the traps.

The locally trained Barry's Way owns a proven record on this track, therefore, he can use that experience to his advantage should the Bully find himself with early traffic issues.

And consider Still Helina from her tidy ace trap draw. She isn't the strongest at the business end over 520m, but she does own an abundance of early pace.

Each Friday the sharp sprinter Complicit turns up at Hatrick and he invariably leaves the track with a victory.

He appeals as the Quaddie anchor in the third leg, although if you want some cover here, then include last week's stylish winner See To Believe.

The Wellington Club has saved the best until last when the time-honoured $4,000 E J Wing Memorial Cup will be decided.

Darlyne Ottey is backing up from her strong Palmerston North 457m win on Monday.

She draws poorly in the five trap, especially as she is likely to cut straight down to the rail here.

However, she is smart enough to begin swiftly enough to snare the early race lead.

Look towards her kennelmate Zamdato to push up along the rail from the one trap here.

It would pay to overlook his Christmas Eve Cambridge 457m miss and go back to his New Zealand debut effort which was on this track when he gamely chased Darlyne Ottey home over this trip.

The proven Cool Izmir endured a luckless outing in last week's Waikato Cup final. He has compiled a respectable enough record on this track to merit his inclusion here.
