THE west coast's wild storms had the biggest bearing on the makeup of this weekend's final in the Wanganui premier cricket one-day competition after it drove the semifinalists from the field on Saturday.

Both Property Brokers United and Matt Burke Engineering Marton Saracens were more than happy to jog off the Springvale artificial wicket even before the first spots of rain were felt.

"We went to three venues before we came here," said Saracens captain Dominic Rayner.

Having been scheduled to play on Tasman Tanning No1 back at Victoria Park, the two sides found the sodden pitch and field in no fit state, then they drove to the Wanganui Collegiate grounds, only to find the sprinklers turned on as no games were expected there.

After only just making the semifinals over winless Collegiate, Saracens knew undefeated United would be going through in the advent of a washout, but there was a bit more on the line back at Victoria Park between Bayer Marist and St Johns Tech.

As that game was called off with a few overs remaining in the first innings, Council of Clubs chairman Neil Kirkwood was spending yesterday going back over all the results from the one-day competition to see which team would advance.

Yesterday, Kirkwood said it was likely to be Marist, based on overall run rate, but this was still to be confirmed.

From the cricket that was played, Marist's Ross Kinnerley still had enough time to put together his most impressive batting performance, racking up 129 from 121 balls to help his team to a whopping 293-6 by the 43rd over when the rain came.

Having lost a few good players back to university, Marist opened with regular lower to middle order batsmen in Kinnerley and Sam O'Leary, and while wickets fell at the other end, Kinnerley kept going for his fastest score in Premier 1.

"Some bad balls, and I took advantage. A fast outfield helps," he said.

Deek Reuters chipped in with a good 61 from 67 balls, while Craig Thorpe (25no) was setting to take the team over the 300 mark before stumps were pulled.

Jessica Watkins took three wickets but was expensive with 66 runs from her 10 overs, while Caleb Greene took 2-34 from six.

Trent Hemi was wicketless, but economical with 0-36 from eight.

United and Saracens had already gone off by then, with Saracens sitting on 149-7 in the 41st over.

After a lean summer, Rayner finally had some success with the bat, scoring 87 from 98 balls before chopping a Robbie Power delivery on to his stumps.

Apart from Bryant Galpin's 15, no one else reached double figures. Ritesh Verma took 2-23 from his 10, getting the key middle order wickets of Ford and Gordon Dan, while Power was looking to clean up the tail with 2-9 in his third over when play was halted.
