Rangatira Golf Club's Jill Adkins is not given to over-exaggeration of achievements.
"I'm not a very good golfer. But you don't have to be, obviously."
The 71-year-old was downplaying her amazing shot during the club's Ladies Opening Day ambrose tournament last Wednesday, where she hit a hole in one atthe eighth hole with her nine wood.
Teeing off for her ambrose team on the Par 3, 100m ladies tee, which is on a rise, Adkins' shot went over the track down to the right of the green, then struck the hill to the left and careened into the hole.
A stunned Adkins then turned to her approaching team, who had not seen the result of her swing.
"They asked, 'where is the ball'? [I said] 'umm, it's kind of in the hole'. All of us started screaming.
"I suppose you don't call it a wonderful shot, but when it goes in the hole it doesn't matter."
The shot helped Adkins' team go on to win the ambrose and although there was a little speculation whether it would be counted as an official club ace given it was during a teams event, she believes Rangatira will formally recognise it.
Adkins took up the sport when her eldest child started school, eventually getting down to a 19 handicap, before requirements of family and a bout of poor health meant she could only play occasionally.
Adkins struck her ace on the same day Waitotara's Francis Hill made one at the Castlecliff Golf Club - both the first for the Wanganui region in 2015.
