The Grant family from Ashhurst have certainly put in the miles for NZ Masters Multisport Kayaking in Wanganui.
Father and daughter Max and Melanie Grant circumnavigated the South Island last year raising more than $6000 for child cancer.
"We decided to do something a bit different and circumnavigate the South Island. Ittook us 71 paddling days, so we're pretty fit for these Games," Max said.
Wife and mother Margaret Grant, however, was the only one of the trio to win gold on day one of the competition on the Whanganui River yesterday.
"Margaret and I have only missed one Masters in Wanganui since they began. That was last Games."
The Grant family usually don't go home from the Games empty handed and with more events to race following yesterday morning's Chronicle interview, Melanie was sitting in second place in her age group.
"This is my second games because I was too young before that," said Melanie, who, like her dad, is also a keen triathlete.
"I don't do many triathlons these days, but Melanie enjoys it. We are also into whitewater rafting and mainly train and race on the Manawatu River," Max said.
