In fact, Perofeta scored more than 100 points in his debut first class rugby season. He scored 47 points in Wanganui's seven Heartland matches, made up of eight tries, one penalty and two conversions. He was even more impressive for the New Zealand Heartland XV scoring 58 points in just three matches against NZ Marist and two clashes with the Australian Barbarians. Perofeta scored three tries and kicked six penalties, a field goal and 11 conversions.
While Horrocks' nomination is worthy after a great season, Perofeta remains favourite of at least the two Steelform Wanganui players, if not all three named.
NZ Heartland coach Grant Keenan was impressed by Perofeta describing the youngster as "all class".
Wanganui has an enviable record in this category winning the title fives years on end, although missing the last two.
Wanganui and NZ Heartland captain and flanker Peter Rowe has won the title twice in 2010 and 2012. Winger Cameron Crowley won Heartland Player of the Year in 2008, followed by winger Asaeli Tikoirotuma in 2009 and lock Jon Smyth in 2011.
Meanwhile, the 105m try that won Steelform Wanganui the Meads Cup in the final against South Canterbury has also been nominated for Try of the Season in the Steinlager Rugby Awards.
It was a rip roaring tale of four young men - winger Michael Nabuliwaqe, second-five Poasa Waqanibau, centre Trinity Spooner-Neera and winger Samu Kubunavanua who juggled the ball between them while running the length of the field in the 64th minute to give Wanganui the win.
It appeared prominently on social media gaining accolades in many quarters.
It is, however, up against stiff competition, including Rugby World Cup tries and even women's rugby dot downs.
Traditionally a dozen or more tries are nominated and voted on by rugby fans to whittle the finalists down to just three from which the winner will be chosen on awards night.
