Manawatu Wanganui are the surprise joint leaders in division one after the first day of the Toro Men's inter-provincial golf tournament at the Poverty Bay club in Gisborne.

They opened their campaign with a convincing win over Northland 4.5-.5 and then yesterday afternoon finished all square with Hawke's Bay who join them at the top of the table.

Marton's Lachie McDonald, playing at No3, was in fine form, beating Northland's Lee Neumann 3 and 2, and then Hawke's Bay's Matt Mouat 4 and 3.

The rest of the Manawatu Wanganui team is Josh Munn (Manawatu), Tyler Hodge (Levin), Rhys Watkins (Manawatu) and Trent Munn (Manawatu).

Waikato and Bay of Plenty are undefeated to lead the division two standings, while two of the pre-tournament favourites, Canterbury and Auckland, both suffered shock losses on day one.
