The name Fahrensohn has cropped up in New Zealand men's basketball for many years and we'll get a double dose of it during the 2013 New Zealand Masters Games in Wanganui.

Jeff and Christopher Fahrensohn feature in the Waitakere Old Boys visitors not for the first time, it has to be said.

Former NBL player Jeff Fahrensohn says he and the team have been Games' visitors since 2005 and have a well-sorted routine where enjoyment is No 1 factor, and results probably No 2!

Waitakere includes one or two former national representatives with Brendon Pongia featuring in that group.

Pongia, of course, is now a front man on TV1.

Jeff Fahrensohn explains the make-up of the team, and also its "social calendar".

"We are made up of former Waitakere Basketball National League players from the 80s and 90s and use this tournament as a reunion every two years.

"I have played in the NBL for Waitakere Rangers and the Wellington Saints.

"My brother Chris also played for Waitakere. We also have a few former New Zealand players in the team including Brendon 'Perfect' Pongia.

"Most of the players are involved in coaching at junior level at Waitakere, so having played and coached there, we try to represent our club to the best of our ability every time we come down."

But!

"Although we are very competitive on the court, our main reason for playing in Wanganui is more geared towards the social aspect and catching up with old friends.

"We normally rent a house [Castlecliff] and spend our days playing and recovering and our nights mixing and mingling in the party tent.

"For years we have been the instigators of many a post-tent party back at our house and next year will be no different, so if you also believe the 1am closing time is too early, look for the tall blokes leading the conga line out to the car park!

"For us, the great memories we leave with far outweigh our painful broken bodies at the end of the tournament and that's why we keep coming back for more punishment," Fahrensohn said.

The team's results: 2005, over 35s winners; 2007, over 35s 2nd place; 2009, over 40s winners; 2011, over 40s 3rd place.

There are only 77 entrants so far but commonsense suggests a lot more to come. There are 41 men and 13 different teams at this stage, with rumours about another to come from Adelaide.
