OK, THE season is well and truly under way although only a couple of clubs seem to have anything worth publicising.
I'm sure it can't be true.
Come on you media liaison people, it would be disappointing to hear that a club event was poorly supported and numbers were down when there
is free means of advertising your events on a weekly basis which you haven't used.
Lydia Ko again features on the women's golfing scene, although the event was the New Zealand Women's Open, it is still a co-sanctioned event for the Women's European Tour.
Ko finished in fourth equal place on 7 under which was five shots off the winning total set by Australian Kirstie Smith.
Smith is a 22-year-old from Perth who had set herself a goal of winning at least one event this season and, by all accounts, those goals might well need to be re-established for the remainder of the year.
I guess she will be looking for bookends this season. Now, if age and back pain have put paid to good golf for you lately, take a look at American Fred Couples.
Couples and former world No 1 Vijay Singh showed great form this past week in the Northern Trust Open to show that age and physical ailments are no barrier to playing good golf.
Couples, who for years has struggled with chronic back pain, has defied the odds to once again be a force to be reckoned with.
He, along with Vijay who has amassed something like 18 PGA wins in his 40s, seem to indicate that age and ailment are no barrier to top play with the correct frame of mind.
Of course, that is easier said than done for most of us.
Wanganui Golf Club Men's Club Championship qualifying is on. The next two rounds fall on February 26 and March 5.
The course will be closed on Sunday, February 27, for C grade pennants.
The first round of the weekend counts for qualifying and the best two gross scores count towards the qualifying status.
Give the teams at Castlecliff or Marton golf clubs a call to book your rounds, if you usually play at Wanganui.
The Rotary Club of Wanganui North is hosting its annual charity fundraiser on February 27 at Castlecliff.
This might be a great opportunity for members of Belmont to head out that way for a game and support a worthwhile charity at the same time.
The format will be ambrose and teams of four which must include at least one non-golfer. This would be a great time to encourage one of your friends, workmates or a family member for a fun day out.
ShelterBox will be the recipient of the fundraiser and is an international organisation which specialises in disaster relief. Considering how the year has started, one would imagine it is a busy and worthwhile charity.
Remember, the venue is the Castlecliff Golf Club, February 27, with 11.30am registration for a noon start or give Chris Fong a call.
The end of this week signals the end of Jamie and Julynn's involvement with the Tawhero Golf Complex.
I am saddened with the outcome and disappointed that the big ball of red tape is still firmly attached to decision-makers. All the best for your future endeavours which, from the sounds of it, will be offshore.
Now March is a busy month golf-wise so next week we will be featuring local events, dates and times. Tirangi has a huge event on, which will be mentioned next week.
If you want your club events mentioned, all you have to do is email me on pcassidy@xtra.co.nz or give me a call on 0275 345 203. Good golfing.
