There is always a focus on fun and this year the aim is to create a carnival atmosphere.

Runners and walkers are gearing up for the 40th annual Property Brokers Round The Bridges fun run this month.

The annual charity event is organised by the Wanganui Chronicle and sponsored by Property Brokers, who are celebrating their fifth year of supporting the event.

Each year, a local charity is selected to benefit from Round the Bridges proceeds and Birthright Wanganui received $3100 last year.

This year it is Plunket's turn and the organisation's community support coordinator Heidi Wright said money raised will be put towards community programmes.

"We run playgroups and parent education classes that always need funding," she said.

Property Brokers' Wanganui Branch Manager, Philip Kubiak said he was proud to be sponsoring the event again this year.

"It is a real pleasure to be involved and to think that this is the 40th year of Round the Bridges.

"It is a great way to support charities and bring the community together at the same time"

Chronicle Features Manager Gené Toyne said there is always a focus on fun and this year the aim is to create a "carnival atmosphere".

"There will be live bands, a sausage sizzle and we encourage participants and their supporters to wear fancy dress.

The Round the Bridges run/walk will start at Kowhai Park on Sunday, May 21, and races will have staggered starts from 9am to 10am. Cost of entry is $2 for children aged 5 to 12 and $5 for entrants 13 years and over.
