Who will meet their Waterloo?

Regular Friday Hatrick attendee Bigtime Paddy is taking a leave pass from the open class 520m event this evening.

He has a much bigger weekend assignment in front of him which potentially could eventually see the talented Lisa Cole-trained greyhound taking in his place in a heat for the world's richest greyhound race.

Bigtime Paddy commenced that pathway last Friday at Hatrick when he easily won his heat for the time honoured Waterloo Cup.

His tidy 30.07s 520m gallop sees him advancing to the $32,785 final over 527m at the Manukau Stadium this Sunday afternoon.

Qualifying heats for the Waterloo Cup, which was first contested for as a coursing event in 1878, was contested at four different venues last week with the first two finishers in each heat going onto contest the final.

The other qualifier from the Hatrick heat was the Craig Roberts, Canterbury-trained chaser Mina Allen.

Bigtime Paddy has been provided with no favours for Sunday after being allocated the tricky five trap to hop away from.

In saying that, the racing styles owned by the greyhounds drawn either side of him isn't expected to hinder him during the initial all important early rush for positions.

He does own slippery pace, as his best winning Hatrick 520m winning time of 29.79s indicates.

Therefore, using that asset and leading into the first turn can see Bigtime Paddy adopting catch-me-if-you-can tactics.

If the others can't, then aside from receiving Group 1 winning accolades, it will be a reality to receive the trip to Melbourne to contest a heat, guaranteed for the Waterloo Cup winner, for November's A$600,000 Melbourne Cup.

The trainer's husband Brendon Cole advised, "Yes, we will definitely make the trip".

"It's a once in a life time opportunity to race in a greyhound Melbourne Cup series.

"Bigtime Paddy has early pace and that is the key point that can help him get there."

Cole also indicated that Bigtime Paddy's classy kennelmate Allegro Gun could possibly also campaign in Melbourne.

"We may take him over there to race in some of their support races."

Meanwhile Allegro Gun is seeking redemption for his luckless Waterloo Cup heat outing last Friday.

He lines up in this evening's open class 520m event (Race 9) where he is a strong winning prospect.
