Whanganui is “in for a bit of a treat” with the weather over Wellington Anniversary weekend in comparison to other celebrating areas.

MetService said residents may need to put up with wet weather today and on Friday before the dry weather settles in over the weekend.

A severe thunderstorm watch is in place from 1-10pm today for the entire Manawatū-Whanganui region, with downpours of up to 25-40mm/h.

Ruapehu District has a heavy rain watch in place from 8am to 11pm today.

However, MetService meteorologist Lewis Ferris said early indications suggested the coming days were looking promising for Whanganui.

“You might actually be in for a bit of a treat,” Ferris said.

“It will be cooler than it has been recently but, in terms of weather for the long weekend, it’s looking pretty good.”

Daily temperatures for Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday are 23C, 22C, 21C and 22C, respectively.

Overnight temperatures are set to drop from where they have been recently, hovering around the low teens, Ferris said.

Overnight on January 9-10, there was a high of 18.4C in Whanganui.

Ferris said Saturday may have a risk of showers, with southeasterly wind set to roll through. However, it would mostly affect parts of the coastline.

The anticipated dry days of Sunday and Monday may be windy, he said.

“Southeast breezes do look to get quite gusty on Sunday and Monday afternoon,” he said.
