Whanganui should stay dry for the rest of the week, with the temperature increasing.

MetService meteorologist Clare O’Connor said daytime temperatures would reach a high of 25C on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, before rising to 28C on Sunday.

“It’s not as warm as some other places but do you really want that?” she said.

Hastings is expected to hit 37C this week, with Tauranga, Gisborne, Napier and Masterton at 30C.

O’Connor said overnight lows would remain around 17C in Whanganui.

“Cloud should clear out today [Thursday] and make way for a clear afternoon, and it’s the same on Friday.

“Saturday and Sunday are looking dry too. Basically, it’s rinse and repeat. A bit of overnight and morning cloud, then it burns off.”

Westerly winds were expected to pick up in the afternoons, reaching 20km/h to 30km/h, she said.

“Saturday is probably the least windy day.”

O’Connor said the highest January temperature recorded in Whanganui since records began in 1979 was 30.7C on January 18, 2011.

“The hottest we have on record is 32.7C on February 10, 2022.”

Rain is expected on Monday morning, with a daytime high of 23C and an overnight low of 13C.
