Whanganui news in brief: A warm and wet August for Whanganui

August was wetter and warmer than usual.

New Zealand had the ninth warmest August on record, with temperatures 0.5 to 1.2C above average.

The warmth was caused by west and northwest winds flowing across warm seas, Niwa said.

The Whanganui region had 120 to 140 per cent more rain than usual. On August 6 there was an avalanche at the Turoa ski area, and the Desert Road was closed by snow and ice on August 23-24.

Water restrictions

Hunterville and Mangaweka residents are asked to conserve water until further notice.

Rangitīkei District Council says due to recent weather conditions, the water entering treatment plants from the Rangitīkei River is poor quality so the plants have been turned off or flows have been reduced.

DairyNZ elections

Dairy farmers considering a role on DairyNZ's board of directors have until September 14 to get their nominations in.

This year one farmer director is being elected, and will join four other farmer-elected directors and three board-appointed directors on the board.
