Whanganui council opens up street naming to public suggestions

Whanganui District Council want your street names ideas... within reason.

Ever wanted to name a Whanganui street? Now's your chance.

Whanganui District Council is now taking public submissions for a bank of future street names for developers to choose from.

The council decided in May to give the public more of a say on what the district's streets are named.

"It's all a part of our feeling of belonging and thanking those people who have gone before us," councillor Helen Craig said.

Mayor Hamish McDouall said at the time there were many Whanganui people who would deserve recognition with a street name.

"We're not going to get Streety McStreetface any time. It's much more likely that we'll get things that honour [known people]."

Developers can submit up to three street names when a new street is created but the public submissions will form a list they will be able to choose from.

Council says priority will be given to names which fit in with the street name themes of an existing area.

But in the absence of a theme names should reflect an appropriate Māori name, a historical person or event, a significant geographical feature or a personal name for special service
