Whanganui's third heritage month begins in September with an amble down Drews Ave - led by a piper - to view historic riverboats.

The grand opening is on September 4, starting at 10am at the Whanganui Regional Museum before heading down to the boats, vintage cars and more music at the weekly Saturday markets.

Transport is the theme this year, and there will be a heritage transport parade in Victoria Ave that includes gigs, fire engines and bicycles, and a parkup of heritage vehicles at Whanganui's racecourse.

Heritage Month runs until September 26, with 35 events including talks, tours, tram and bus rides, boat trips and high tea. The new entrance to the Durie Hill elevator will be opened, with an evening taonga puoro performance by Rob Thorne.

Another highlight is Phantom of the Opera, performed in the Royal Whanganui Opera House from September 17 to 25.

• The event guide is available at Whanganui's i-SITE and other places, and the events are also listed online at www.WhanganuiHeritageTrust.org.nz/HeritageMonth.
