A small fire in a recycling warehouse shed in Whanganui has been contained by firefighters.

Fire and Emergency New Zealand received calls about the fire at 1.35pm on Thursday.

It was at OJI Fibre Solutions, on Maria Place, next to the Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre.

OJI Fibre Solutions manufactures pulp, paper and wood-fibre based packaging solutions, and also provides recycling services.

Fire and Emergency media spokesperson Jill Chalmers-Webley said the fire emerged in the rear, left-hand side of the shed, and crews had got it under control.

Fire crews were extinguishing hot spots, as of 2.15pm, and “doing an overhaul” to clear the space for the fire investigator, Chalmers-Webley said.

The same building had a small fire, thought to have been caused by an incorrectly disposed of battery, at the start of December 2023.

That fire resulted in the recycling centre being unable to receive plastics until the New Year.

The Whanganui District Council has been contacted about how Thursday’s fire will affect operations.
