Confusion surrounds the offer of free tai chi classes for Wanganui District Council staff and elected members.
On Tuesday, an email was sent by a council health and safety adviser to all staff and elected members, offering them the chance to take part in free 20-minute tai chi sessions, led
by instructor Matt Dutton.
The email said tai chi "improves balance, flexibility, strength and fitness, and reduces stress". It said that release from work to attend classes was subject to the relevant manager's approval.
The email provoked an angry reaction from two councillors, with Councillor Michael Laws describing tai chi as "voodoo".
"Tai chi has a philosophy so what's next? Scientology?"
