Ol' King Cole Trio.
It has been over a year since Louis Thompson-Munn brought his Ol' King Cole Trio to Whanganui, and we look forward to another inspiring performance from these three talented musicians.
The trio performs music inspired by the great Nat 'King' Cole and other artists of his era, specifically with a focus
on Nat's early trio that ran from 1943-1950. As well as these popular songs, the musicians will present original compositions. When asked what interests him most about the music the trio plays, Louis says: "The project is special to me as it showcases a specific era and time of Nat King Cole's music and gives us a chance to explore the music and repertoire of other artists that were inspired by Nat. Oscar Peterson was heavily influenced and we look to taking on some of his works."
Callum Allardice will be back playing electric guitar and Rob Henderson will again be on double bass. The band is planning a New Zealand tour and they will be recording an album later in the year. It is great to see each of the musicians making a commitment to developing the trio, and no doubt that will shine through in their music.
The trio performs on Sunday, June 4 at the RSA. Doors open at 5.30pm for meals with the music kicking off at 6.30pm, as usual. Members pay only $10, and non-members $20. Memberships are available at the door.
JAZZ IS ... about learning. Jazz players are always learning. Sonny Rollins, giant of the tenor saxophone, interviewed in Japan at 80 years of age, commented, "I still practise my horn every day."
