Paparangi Sheep Dog Trial Club held their centenary trial over the weekend.

And despite several trial dates clashing, the number of entries were up.

The centenary trial proved to be very successful for Wanganui centre competitors. Raetihi's Merv Williams and Jet won the longhead, Paul Evans from Ohingaiti with Bryte won the shorthead followed closely by Feilding Club member Wendy Schmidt and Dream in 2nd place.

Don White from Mataroa and Mist took out the straight hunt following on from their fine performance at Whangamomona earlier in the week where the duo won the zig-zag hunt. Don also placed 3rd in the shorthead with Jazz.

Jonathan Smailes from Hunterville and Tonic won the zig zag hunt. Jonathan is having a great start to the season with his other huntaway Stella featuring at each Wanganui Trial to date.

The Paparangi Club, once the home of renown triallist Bob Guthrie, has few if any triallists in the club and relies on district people and lifestylers to help out each year.

Secretary Ross Jones was very appreciative of the help Paparangi got from Mangamahu Club members liberating sheep on the straight hunt while Parapara Club's Don Wickham and Waverley's Brian Dickie helped Brian Burke work the sheep before the trial.

The sheep supplied by the Rainey and Wyatt families were very well presented.

It was good to see old club members put in an appearance. Eric Forsyth, now living in town and a life member, did a great job bringing competitors back up the hill after their shorthead runs.

Peter Sherriff, also a life member, came down from Taupo for the centenary. Peter is a paraplegic after a horse accident on the grounds during the 1996 trial. Peter enjoyed catching up with old mates.
