Entries for the Shades of Green art exhibition close this Saturday.

It may not be easy being green but creating a great piece of green art may be easier than you think.

Shades of Green is an art exhibition organised by the Whanganui Green Party to encourage local artists to explore green themes with art.

Selected works will be exhibited at the Community Arts Centre from September 9 to 22 and entries close this Saturday.

Organiser Rosalind Fitzpatrick said there have been a number of excellent entries but more are needed.

"There are some very good sculptures and quilts - we hope to see even more variety.

"Entry is open to all ages and we encourage everyone from the very young to the very old to submit their work."

Artists have the opportunity to sell their work at the exhibition with the proviso that a suggested 30 per cent of the sale price is donated to the Green Party.

Whanganui Green Party candidate Nicola Patrick says she hopes to see a really good range of multimedia entries.

"People might think they have to go to a lot of trouble to create something but they may be surprised to find they already have something they have made from recycled materials."

Ms Patrick said the concept was a bit of a spoof on the erotic romance novel Fifty Shades of Grey by British author E. L. James.

"It seems like a good number to aim for and it will be great if we can get 50 shades of green."
