THREE Kaitoke students took off yesterday, watched by their classmates.
But those left on the ground were just as enthusiastic about the lucky three who took flight over Wanganui with pilot Peter Oberschneider.
We caught up with the Kaitoke year seven and eight students at Wanganui airport who waited for their classmates
to return, and were entertained by their knowledge of flight, which they are studying this term.
Casey-Lee Dyke, James Penn and Jake Houlahan drew their names and won the flight.
James said it was cool to fly in a small plane and see out the front window, followed by a smooth landing on the grass. Jake has only flown in a jumbo jet.
"It was great to see everything from the plane.
"But I didn't like it when Casey took control of the plane and she made the plane go up and down a couple of times."
And for pilot Casey-Lee, who took controls on her first flight ever, the experience was "awesome".
The students have studied how native New Zealand birds fly, looked at the pioneers of flight and will make a model that glides.
