Ruby Musson and Paige Stead, St George's School Multisport Captain and Head of Sports respectively, will be at Castlecliff Beach this Saturday, leading a clean-up of the shore.
"At school, Years 7 and 8 have been doing Social Enterprise, and we had to come up with something that would help
the environment or help someone," says Ruby.
"We were at National Young Leaders' Day in Palmerston North," says Paige, "Riley Hathaway does a TV programme called Young Ocean Explorers and we were inspired by her. She was telling us how there was so much rubbish in the ocean and we need to start doing something about it."
"We did a stall at the markets selling home-made candles, and we're raising money to give to her or to charity," says Ruby. "Also, on August 4 we're going to be doing a beach clean-up, getting rid of the rubbish."
Ruby and Paige are organising the clean-up and want as many people as possible to get involved. Helpers are asked to meet in the carpark by the Duncan Pavilion at 1pm on Saturday.
Ruby and Paige expect the clean-up to last until about 2.45pm.
The public are asked to supply cardboard boxes or paper bags in which to put the rubbish, although the girls are looking to ask a sponsor for paper bags.
"We don't want to use plastic bags," says Ruby. "The rubbish we collect will go to another group at our school. They are making art from recyclables."
