Taihape Area School students are building miniature motorbikes, known as pit bikes, to race at Manfeild next month against other small-bike enthusiasts.
Head of technology Warwrick Greaves said his eight male students were engrossed in building their bikes and busting to race them.
The race meet for the pint-sized bikes
was on October 15, 16 and 17, with people coming from all over the North Island, he said.
Pit bikes are motorbikes for pit mechanics at the big race meets - to get between the various cars in the often huge pits in as short a time as possible.
"They save a lot of time for these guys because they can literally be across the other side of a huge pit in seconds."
