The two Year 3 kids hold Room Eight's highest score in the nationwide programme called My Greatest Feat.
As the end of the initiative fast approaches, St John's Hill pupils
are still actively taking part and are keen to reach the end of the country by tomorrow.
Room Eight at St John's have supposedly travelled 837kms down the country with a total of 2,427,079 steps so far. Room Eight's class teacher, Keith Johnson, said all the kids were very enthusiastic about the programme.
"They are logging on daily and putting in their scores as they trek down New Zealand. We have passed through Palmerston North and are currently near Shannon in the Manawatu," he said yesterday.
"We hope to be in Wellington by Thursday." Seven-year-old Sam Cosford is farthest ahead with 95,849 steps, closely followed by classmate Cameron MacIntosh, on 88,683.
The boys are modest about their efforts and said the reason they had clocked up so many steps was that they ran around lots playing various games like soccer and tag.
Mr Johnson said the boys were very active and got out and about a lot during school time. Rooms Two, Five and Six were also in on the walking game and were well on their way down the middle of the country. The steps are counted during school time only and exclude the number of steps the kids take before 8.30am and after 3pm.
The three-week nationwide programme began on July 21 to coincide with the lead-up to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
The programme provides participating school children with pedometers to count the number of steps they take each day. The steps are tallied to log the location the children have supposedly walked to, from Cape Reinga to Invercargill. St George's School in Wanganui will be hot on St John's heels, as Heather Puklowski's class total had reached 638.3kms on Tuesday.
