INVESTIGATION: The SPCA is investigating an animal welfare complaint in Whanganui.

The SPCA has removed an unspecified number of horses from a Whanganui property after concerns about animal welfare.

SPCA chief executive Andrea Midgen said the SPCA inspectorate removed the horses last week.

"This is part of an ongoing animal welfare investigation and so we cannot make any further comment at this time."

In June, the SPCA launched an investigation into the alleged poor condition of 28 thoroughbred brood mares after an animal welfare complaint.

The horses were understood to be kept on land at Kaitoke.
