Saracens give lesson to Collegiate schoolboys

Matt Burke Engineering Marton Saracens comfortably accounted for newcomers Wanganui Collegiate as play finally got underway in Bullocks Coastal Challenge Cup on Saturday.

Saracens was the only local side to pick up a win in a weekend in which St Johns Tech and Marist suffered heavy defeats at the hands of Horowhenua-Kapiti clubs.

Two weeks ago rain washed out the opening round of the one-day competition involving Wanganui and Horowhenua-Kapiti sides, before another week off for representative Chapple Cup last weekend.

At Centennial Park in Marton, Saracens batted first and made their way to 133 all out, anchored by a patient 39 from opener Scott Oliver.

Marton were 97-5 at one stage before the Collegiate bowlers took care of the tail with Ben Kelt (3-25) the pick of them.

Coming back into Premier 50-over cricket, Collegiate struggled in the chase and were three wickets down before getting a run on the board.

Scaracens' Bryant Galpin (5-18) tore through the schoolboys, who managed 76 before being dismissed in 20 overs.

Beau Hourigan (25) and Nate Lewis (17) were the only Collegiate batsmen to score double figures.

At Tasman Tanning Victoria Park, an innings of 91 at more than a run a ball from Ross Kinnerley was the only resistance Tech put up in their pursuit of Paraparaumu's 232.

The defending champion Paraparaumu batted out their 50 overs and were able to create mini-partnerships for each wicket.

Fraser Kinnerley picked up 3-38 of his 10 overs, but Tech were unable to find the back-to-back wickets they probably needed to give themselves a chance.

In response Ross Kinnerley's innings was a shining light and the only batsmen to score double figures - as he hit 10 fours and two sixes on his way to 91 off 85.

Tech were 67-2 at one point in the chase but from there lost regular wickets to be all out for 160 in the 40th over.

Meanwhile, Marist's trip to Weka Park in Raumati Beach was short-lived as they were demolished by Kapiti Old Boys by eight wickets in 13 overs.

The visiting side could only manage 105 despite a half-century from Mark Fraser.
Marist were going strong at 78-3 approaching the 20th over, before a collapse ended their innings just 12 overs later with the only 27 more runs on the board.

Kapiti bowler Carter Andrews (4-24) proved a handful for Marist.

In Levin, Weraroa cruised in their chase of Levin Old Boys' 215 all out, clinching a five-wicket in with fours overs to spare thanks to openers Matthew Good (97) and Adam Simonsen (72) - who put on a 151-run opening stand.

Last season's beaten finalists Property Brokers United still wait to get their season underway, having sat out Saturday with a bye.

Next Saturday, Collegiate host Tech in the only match to be played in Whanganui.

Marist travel south to take on Weraroa, as do United who are away to Kapiti Old Boys, while Saracens have the bye.
