Roller derby party with a difference

It was an end-of-year party with a difference for Whanganui roller derby club West Coast Bombers.

"Instead of getting drunk we decided to do an 'amazing race'," said club member Emma Camden, aka Crystal Crusher.

Club members were divided up into different teams, with all levels of skaters represented, and received instructions on tasks they had to complete within a certain amount of time.

"We had to do things like serenading members of the public, take photos of ourselves with three separate sculptures, and go on a rock hunt - all on roller skates," Ms Camden said.

"It made us see the city in a different way."

She said the event was good publicity for the club, as a lot of people had seen the skaters zipping around town in group.

Ms Camden said the event was such a success that they were considering running it again.

"Next time we might invite members of the public to take part," she said.

The West Coast Bombers, one of two roller derby leagues in Whanganui, will start up their summer skating programme soon. New skaters are welcome to join their next intake beginning in February. Check out the West Coast Bombers on Facebook.
