Searchlights used in World War II will be beamed into the skies above Wanganui as part of the VCC Rally 2012 during the River City's impending festival weekend.
The three lights, built in Sydney in 1941, were brought to New Zealand and used to support coastal and air defence during
the war, with each one capable of producing a ray about 50km in length.
Wayne Clark, who owns one of the searchlights, said it was believed that this would be the first time all three lights had operated at the same time, and in the same city, since the war.
Mr Clark will be a member of the team transporting two of the searchlights - his own and another from Hawke's Bay - along with their generators and equipment, from Hastings to Wanganui using four 1954-55 Fordson tractors.
That journey is expected to take two days, and will begin next Tuesday.
