Daniel Frith appears to be a passionate man.

"He has a particular passion for repairing old cars," his defence lawyer, Harete Hipango, said on Monday.

"One could also suggest he had a passion for cannabis use."

Frith is on to his third conviction for cultivating cannabis - he pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced this week in the Whanganui District Court.

Police searched his central Wanganui home on November 12. He had 424g of dried cannabis as well as about 12 plants in growing rooms.

He told officers he grew the drugs for personal use.

Frith also has previous convictions for meth-related offending.

Judge David Cameron sentenced him to three months of community detention, with an 8pm-6am curfew daily, and six months' supervision.

The judge also ordered the destruction of all drug-related paraphernalia.
