Walking into Pauline Baddeleys' shop in Taihape, you are greeted by vibrant colour.
The Quilted Gumboot is packed with quilting fabrics and it's the quirky Kiwiana that stands out.
They are also Mrs Baddeley's favourite fabrics which she has made into bright quilts that adorn the walls of her shop on Tui Street.
She stocks House of Hill, Jacqui Karl's koru hearts and dragon flies as well as bright gumboots and tea cosies. Mrs Baddeley has been quilting for 20 years.
She buys in bulk and cuts the fabrics into fat quarters and fat eights.
Mrs Baddeley stocks photo fabrics where pictures are copied onto fabric and then made into quilts.
One quilt is made from her father's shirts with pictures of him, and another is called Tea at Aunties.
"There was always food at auntie's and mum's chocolate sponge cake was the best," she says.
Mum was Noreen Banks and an original copy of her handwritten chocolate sponge recipe is a piece in the quilt.
Mrs Baddeley is also an enrolled nurse and works at the Taihape Hospital when she's not in the shop.
She said she opened the shop three years ago when McRindles closed because she wanted somewhere to buy her threads.
With husband Richard's help, they brought corrugated iron in from the paddock for the authentic-looking counter, painted the shop bright colours, left the bars on the windows from the former TAB, put her parent's 15-year old couch in the window where friends or customers spend time, and opened the doors.
Wanganui fabric doll maker Jill Maas has held classes at the shop and Mrs Baddeley will place those interested in quilting on an email list for future classes.
The Quilted Gumboot, open most days 10am-4.30pm and closed by 2.30pm when she is nursing. Quilt exhibition, October 15, 16, 17, 9.30am-5pm, the Coach House Museum, 40 Bowen St, Feilding.
