A man accused of dragging a police officer along Victoria Ave with his car appeared in the Whanganui District Court on Tuesday.
Pehira Heremaia Eruwera Te Tue has yet to plead to driving dangerously causing injury, assaulting a constable with intent to obstruct him in the execution of his duty, failing to remain stopped and driving while suspended.
On March 14 Te Tue was pulled over for unsafe driving. It is alleged that as an officer arrived at the driver's side of the vehicle, it was driven forward, so he had reached through the window to try to turn the engine off.
Police say the driver grabbed the officer's wrist and accelerated forward at the same time, leaving the officer unable to free himself. As the vehicle gained speed, the officer was able to put his other arm through the open rear window and hold on to the vehicle's pillar. The officer was eventually shaken off as the vehicle went over judder bars, and he slid along the road and crashed into parked cars.
He was taken to hospital with grazes on his legs and arms.
