We have a new talent at Repertory Theatre.
Ashlyn Morris, a young lady who has recently relocated from New Plymouth is rehearsing two roles in Repertory's Christmas pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk. Ashlyn plays the parts of Betsy the Busty Cow as well as Goosey the Goose.
Drama was a favourite
subject throughout Ashlyn's school career. She completed a Masters of Social Work degree and a Bachelor's in performing and screen arts in directing and writing.
What's her favourite part of Jack and the Beanstalk?
"The songs — there's a cow song and a goose song. Betsy sings a duet with Jack with backing vocals from the company. All the company songs are really great too. It's all very cheeky and very funny and I enjoy making people laugh."
As well as roles in school and Uni productions Ashlyn enjoyed taking the part of Isabella Bird in Top Girls. Middle Age Spread began rehearsals soon after she arrived in Whanganui so Ashlyn made herself available to help backstage. She'll be on stage laying golden eggs this Christmas.
Gertie Grabber, the giant's evil housekeeper, played by Hilary Cowan, keeps a close eye on Goosey. This means Gertie is rather busy as she also has another role — she's also Mrs Stilton, the wicked, grasping, capitalist landlady who's keeping Jack's mother poor.
Audiences will be familiar with Hilary, who's played many roles in Wanganui theatre. Not only is she known as an actress, but as she says she's done just about everything else that needs to be done in theatre, from set painting to lighting.
