Following the Breeding, a talk by Terry Dowdeswell, Chair of the Bason Botanic Gardens Trust.
When: 7.30pm, March 20
Where: Davis Lecture Theatre, Whanganui Regional Museum
Terry's talk will cover:
■ His introduction to flowers and breeding, and how he exchanged a fascination with chrysanthemums for an obsession with delphiniums;
■ His development of
outstanding delphiniums that anyone can grow from seed, where previously the best were available only from cuttings;
■ The seeds of travel: where the delphiniums took him, and why;
■ How public and private botanic gardens can serve plant conservation; and
■ Where to now?
Terry got his adult education in a greenhouse, pollinating delphiniums and listening to National Radio. He recollects once hearing serialised extracts from A River Rules my Life by Mona Anderson, and feels this talk could be called A Flower Rules my Life, particularly given the pun between flower and river!
Nature Talks is a series of monthly talks offered by three local environmental organisations — the Wanganui Museum Botanical Group, the Whanganui branch of Forest & Bird, and Birds New Zealand (Whanganui Region) — in conjunction with the Whanganui Regional Museum, on topics related to New Zealand's environment and natural history, and their conservation. The talks are held on the third Tuesday of each month (unless notified otherwise because of the speaker's unavailability on that day).
The talks are held in the Davis Lecture Theatre, Whanganui Regional Museum (Watt St entrance), starting at 7.30pm.
Entrance is free.
