Geoffrey Karipa gave someone a bloody nose last year, but not in the way one might expect.

Karipa was arguing with a woman in a Wanganui driveway on November 22 and threatened to kill her, at which point a man rushed to her rescue.

Karipa threw a punch at him, which glanced off the side of his face.

The man grabbed Karipa by his arms and pinned him to the bonnet of a car, repeatedly telling him to calm down.

In response, Karipa bit the man on the nose for about 20 seconds, drawing blood and sending the victim fleeing back into his nearby house.

The man went to Whanganui Hospital and was treated for the bite.

The victim has some scarring from the incident and had to miss work for a week.

Karipa pleaded guilty in the Whanganui District Court on Tuesday to assault with intent to injure.

Judge David Cameron sentenced him to nine months in prison, with six months post-release conditions.
