Mr Eliason said the man told him he was heading to work in Oreore when the accident happened about 10am.
The ute and the tank flipped over the bank before landing upright next to the river.
"One more little bit and he would have been in the river, which would have been very bad, because it is very deep along there," Mr Eliason said.
The man complained of a sore neck, so Mr Eliason called an ambulance and drove him about 10 minutes down the road to a layby, where they were met by a St John ambulance.
The Chronicle understands the man was home by mid-afternoon with a case of whiplash.
Police did not attend the accident.
