Wanganui District Council is evaluating whether LED lighting should be rolled out across the city's 5500 street lights.
Feedback is being sought from the public on a trial of the system, in which the technology has been installed on the City Bridge.
Councillor Ray Stevens, who chairs the infrastructure and property committee, said the public would notice that the new LED fittings produce a white light, as opposed to the orange glow given by the sodium lights, which were replaced. He said the new fittings used 52 per cent less power than the sodium lights and lasted 4-5 times longer, which for the City Bridge equated to a saving of $9000 over the lights' lifespan in reduced power and maintenance costs.
The LED lighting created a more natural light, which reduced glare, helping drivers to see more clearly at night, he said.
"There are clearly a range of potential benefits and savings for the public, but the council would like to know what the public think about the new style of lighting."
